BREAKING BOXING NEWS FLASH
His new promoter Golden Boy is putting the idle too long Joan Guzman right to work.
Guzman, age 33, is a two time world champion who has a 29-0 record with 17 knockouts. But he has not boxed since Dec. 20 when he posted a decision victory over Ameth Diaz in Santo Domingo.
Examiner.com and Boxingconfidential have learned that a bout between Guzman and lean, lanky South African Ali “Rush Hour” Funeka has been approved for the vacant IBF title.
That crown became vacant when Nate Campbell failed to make the 135 pound limit for his Feb. 14 bout in Florida against the 31 year old Funeka.
Funeka made a strong showing over 12 rounds but dropped a majority decision to the more experienced Soupy.
Funeka has a 30-2 record with 25 knockouts.
No immediate word on site of the title bout or the TV outlet.
Although I have been tarred, feathered and pilloried for saying so, I still regard Guzman, until proven otherwise, as the world’s best lightweight.
Yes, above and beyond Juan Manuel Marquez.
Maybe I am a fistic fool but at least I am repetitive.
