The shaky Juan Manuel Marquez-Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sept. 19 PPV TV bout finally got some publicity Monday but I don’t think it’s the kind that promoter Golden Boy was looking for.
Mayweather’s uncle, former world champion and repeat jailbird Roger “Black Mamba” Mayweather, was arrested by police in Las Vegas for assault Melissa St. Vil, a pro boxer he has trained.
LV Metro Police are reporting that Mayweather, age 48, was acting more like a python or boa constrictor when they showed up at a private residence Sunday morning.
They responded to a 911 call from a woman who said he was being assaulted and strangled.
Police said that, upon their arrival, Mayweather had a choke hold, his hands around the neck of the woman.
Cops also said that St. Vil had marks on her neck and that Mayweather had defensive wounds. The victim said she was punched in the ribs by Mayweather and that she hit him with a lamp.
Mayweather has gone to jail in the past for assault on a woman. He assaulted a female relative in 2007 and did a six month Clark County jail stint.
When Mayweather released his grip, police report that St. Vil began coughing and spitting up blood.
How this will affect Mayweather’s comeback bout is uncertain. There have been reports that his father, trainer and ex-fighter Floyd Mayweather Sr., is very sick. At last report, Mayweather Sr. was recuperating at the family’s original hometown, Grand Rapids, Mich.
You can be sure Mayweather will bring in someone else to work his corner.
The undefeated veteran fighter may not need another head trainer in the gym as he virtually trains himself anyway.
And the show, I suppose, must go on.
It is possible that if the wheels of justice move slowly enough, Uncle Roger can still act as his nephew’s trainer but it could be a media distraction for a promotion that is wobbly already.
