Boxing’s rumor mill is getting less rest than gymnasium workaholic Coach Freddie Roach.
Just when I thought the rumor churning machine would take some time off on the day after Miguel Cotto’s smartly fought split decision victory over Joshua Clottey, a bombshell set the Old Mill into full scale operation.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr., according to a press release sent out Sunday afternoon, is not going to be able to have his comeback bout July 18 HBO PPV against Mexican ringmaster Juan Manuel Marquez as scheduled.
Unspecified “rib injury” is given as the causation for the cancellation and I call it that because no new date was given.
Fresh from the oven like hot bagels, here are your top rumors:
1. The awesome show of respect given by 17,000 Puerto Ricans to Pinoy Idol Manny Pacquiao just before the Clottey-Cotto WBO welterweight title bout started at the Garden so shocked Mayweather, watching at home in Vegas, that he fell off his couch and landed on his ribs.
2. I am not ribbing you about rumor number 1.
3. Tickets were going begging for the stupidly scheduled midsummer night’s scheme. The prices are too high and the interest is minimal. Mayweather’s absence from the ring is one factor and another is that Marquez, while a great talent, is nowhere near the homeland popularity level of former MX ring icons Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. Selling tickets for a Juan Ma fight in Houston against Baby Bull Diaz at fan friendly prices is one thing, jacking the prices up for Vegas is another.
4. Did I mention rumor number 1, the Mayweather bounce off the Barcalounger. Can you blame the man after hearing the thunderous applause the boxing smart Boricuas gave to his successor as Pound For Pound king?

5. That perhaps Golden Boy has been directed by Mayweather to put Marquez in storage and to pursue, with less onerous money demands, Pacman’s next bout. Mayweather may not like waiting, which is what Bob Arum has in mind, to face the still improving and getting sharper Pacquiao in 2010. PBF may want his Pacuiao Pie In The Pay Per View Sky delivered now especially in light of his horrible tax problems.
