Time MagazineLAS VEGAS--Taking the “im” out of “impossible” is not easy or else everybody would be doing it.
But I, Michael The Magnificent Marley, can now make the claim to having achieved this. Thus proving that even an older White Gorilla can learn new tricks.
On Thursday night, inside the Palms Resort & Casino where on Friday Super Zap Judah, Joel Casamayor and Ron Johnson headline a PPV TV card entitled “Road To Redemption,” I squeezed a compliment for Manny Pacquiao from his toughest critic.
Yes, indeed, I elicited perhaps, unwittingly, some few words of praise from Floyd Joy Mayweather Sr. concerning the Pinoy Idol who he has been unable to beat from the opposite corner.
The positivity came out the usual negativity.
But considering how Mayweather has verbally lashed and trashed Megamanny in the past including alleging that he uses illegal drugs, I think Pacman should take this comment and frame it for posterity.
We were discussing how Coach Freddie Roach says he wants Pacman fighting Miguel Angel Cotto like the proverbial cat on a hot tin roof with continual movement and avoiding laying on the ropes.
Mayweather rejects the notion of Pacquiao doing any Fancy Dan style boxing out of hand.
And Mayweather went back to his suggestions that Pacman is cheating to get his victories.
“Cotto is much stronger physically than this guy,” Mayweather said. “If he isn’t, then tell my why or what makes Manny so strong? If Pacquiao can drop this guy Cotto, then you should take Pacquiao to a doctor, cut him open and had him examined to what is inside him that makes him so strong.”
Mayweather said he realizes his allegations infuriate the Pacman camp and Paclanders across the glove but that he doesn’t care.
“I call a spade a spade and a heart a heart. I can’t see Pacquiao landing any shots which can take Cotto down. Oscar went in there dehydrated, making a weight he had not made in 12 years. As for Ricky Hatton, he might have been just scared. He seemed like he wanted to get knocked out.”
Smokin' Joe Frazier, legendary fighter
Okay, you’re asking, now Marley where is the hidden compliment. The foregoing seems like the usual “Pretty Daddy” vitriol, right?
“Pacquiao don’t know how to box. He can’t be no defensive fighter because he is still a brawler. He’s a little Joe Frazier.”
Come on now, a comparison to Smokin’ Joe, even in miniature, is not chopped liver, folks.
Mayweather has rejoined the Johnson camp to train the 11-1 light heavyweight who is from Cleveland, lives in Las Vegas and is co promoting the Palms show along with former world champion Fernando Vargas.
“I think Ron Johnson is a good fighter,” Mayweather said. “He could become a light heavyweight champion.”
Johnson came in at 184 pounds for this eight round scheduled bout against Dewey Welliver, 18-19-1, of Snoqualmie, Wash. Welliver weighed in at 174 pounds.
Finally, Mayweather said he has been regaining his health in a continuing battle with the lung disease known as sarcoidosis.
“I am feeling a lot better, I am back in the gym here in Vegas.”
