If you have been watching the news lately then maybe you have heard of the diet phenomenon The Cookie Diet. Pioneered by Dr. Sanford Siegal, this diet allows followers to eat six of his specially formulated cookies a day and then indulge in one full meal a day. He claims that it is a safe, effective form of weight loss followed by many celebrities and other admirably thin followers.
You know that old adage, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is”? Well I don’t even think this diet sounds good. First of all, I like cookies, but do I like them enough to eat one six times a day? NO! I don’t know that I like any food enough to eat it six times a day.
Second of all, what happens when you stop the diet? Stop the diet, stop the weight loss. When you accomplish your goal and go back to eating normally, that is just what you are doing, eating normally. You have learned nothing about what it takes to incorporate really healthy eating back into your life and because you never learned how to eat less without the cookies, gaining the weight back is almost a certainty.

according to Dr. Siegal’s website, the diet allows for only 800 calories a day. This is to low an amount of calories for any human being. Our bodies need at least 1200 calories to maintain normal organ processes and body function. Going lower than that will send the body into starvation mode, that is, when your body holds onto every calorie it can get because it thinks you are starving. It stops burning because it doesn’t believe that it is going to get more anytime soon. It is enough to mess up your metabolism for a very long time.
Dr. Siegal says that these make great snacks for those who are not on a diet. According to what you believe is healthy, he is right. Each cookie has 90 calories, five grams of protein and only two grams of sugar. But on the other hand, it contains beef protein hydrolysate. Is that really something you want in your cookie?
There are testimonies from celebrities on his site, but I believe there is a reason celebrities are constantly on diets. Yes, it is their job to look good, but using fad diets like The Cookie Diet is the reason for their yo-yo success.
My take: Find a better way to get your calories and skip what may sound too good to be true.
