Anaheim signs veteran defender Nick Boynton
Nick Boynton was signed out of the free agent pool earlier today by Anaheim, who was clearly seeking a more experienced, but reasonably priced, defender. Boynton signed a single year contract with the Ducks who agreed to pay him 1.5 million for the season.
When asked about the contract, Ducks general manager explained, "Nick is the type of veteran defenseman we were hoping to add to our lineup. He's played over 500 NHL games and brings a physical presence to our team." A physical presence? I don't think that there is much doubt about that, see picture on right for example.
Boynton comes over from the Florida Panthers, and stands a solid 6'2 and weighs in at 220 pounds. The 30-year old defender concluded last season with 21 points (5+16=21), 91 penalty minutes, and a +7 rating in 68 games played. In March of this previous season, Boynton racked up his 500th career game played. In his career, Boynton has tallied up 128 points (32+96=128), as well as 18 post-season games from 2002-2004 contributing 6 points (1+5=6) and 14 penalty minutes.
In 2004, Boynton represented the East in the NHL All-Star Game while playing with the Boston Bruins. In 2001-2001, he was named to the All-Star Rookie Team, and was also a part of the 2002 YoungStars Game during his first complete NHL season.
So with the addition of this seasoned defenseman to the lineup, the Ducks add some depth with regards to experience to their blue-liners. Expect to see Boynton being paired with several different youngsters to see which pair clicks including potentially Brett Festerling, Brendan Mickkelson, or Brian Salcido.
Furthermore, with the surprisingly low contract (he earned just under 3 million last year), there is still plenty of cap space for the Ducks to extend the contracts of such free agents as Rob Neidermayer, Brett Festerling, and James Wisniewski. So again, Ducks fans look forward to training camp (and the upcoming season) because with these changes, there are more young players with plenty of potential as well as a lot more depth to the lineup.
