Todd Marchant signed a two year contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks which brings back one of the most versatile players from the 2008-2009 roster.
Marchant is a force on the penalty kill despite the limitations of his 5 foot 10 inch stature, ranking him as the second shortest player on the team (only to the 5'9 Andrew Ebbett). Marchant contributed 18 points (5+13=18) in 72 regular season games played, and another 2 points (1+1=2) in 13 playoff games. The one goal Marchant scored was the goal that settled the second game of the Western Conference finals against the Red Wings. Marchant scored in the third overtime period just under 2 minutes into it. For more on that game, click here.
Marchant is known as a more defensive offender on the team along with linemate Rob Neidermayer (also in the picture on the right).
In 17 seasons in the NHL, Marchant has tallied an impressive 1,038 games played and 468 points (176+292=468) as well as 21 powerplay goals, 25 shorthanded goals and 22 game winning goals, all just in regular seasons. In 10 playoff appearences, Marchant has played 89 games during which he racked up 33 points (13+20=33), with three shorthanded goals and two game winning goals.
Marchant recently had to step up as the main center for faceoffs when linemate Samuel Pahlsson was traded at the deadline. Marchant jumped on the opportunity to take control of the playoff circle and with pulling through with clutch goals classifying him as a very consistent player.
So after yesterday's empty feeling of losing Beauchemin and having nothing to show for it, it's nice to know that Marchant is sticking around for another two years for a surprising 2.25 million total.
