To drum up interest for the upcoming teen romance 'I Love You, Beth Cooper', the movie's producers are tapping into social media in a big way. They've started up a facebook fan page for the movie, which hits theaters July 10, and at the official site they're encouraging people to tweet their random thoughts and confessions right there for all to see.
Those are pretty standard these days. But the site's big ask is for people to film their own public confessionals, Beth Cooper-style, and post them on the movie's youtube page for all the world to see. Star Hayden Panettiere (yep, she's Beth Cooper) is there to show you how the 'Beth Cooper Moments of Truth' are done. There already seem to be a few dozen submissions from real folks, though how many of those are "real" is easy to question. This guy below, for example, seems to be mailing it in - right down to when, at the 1:29 mark, he wipes away tears that aren't there.
Anyway, the public confessional idea fits nicely for the movie, since it centers around a graduating high school senior who takes the opportunity of his valedictory address to broadcast to the unknowing world his crush on Beth Cooper, the girl of his dreams (and, considering that she's played by Panettiere, the girl of many young man's dreams).
Give the publicity folks credit for effort, and if you're the public type, head over there and post your own deep, dark secrets. As for the movie, here's hoping that it's better than the book from which it's adapted. Excited by the fact that it was penned by one of my favorite former Simpsons scribes, I cracked that baby open about a year and a half ago - and never made it past the first few chapters. Does that count as a public confession?
