Ever since Chicago took home a bunch of Oscars back in 2003, the movie industry has been proclaiming the triumphant return of the musical. It always seems a bit premature - especially considering that in the years that followed Chicago's $170 million box office take, buzzed-about Broadway adaptations like The Phantom of the Opera and Rent absolutely tanked at the domestic box office.
But those movie pundits finally might be onto something: For the past three years, at least one musical has surpassed the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office (2006's Dreamgirls, 2007's Hairspray and last year's summer sleeper hit Mamma Mia!). Add in the Disney High School Musical movies - last fall's theatrically released HSM 3 raked in more than $250 million at the global box office ($90 million in the U.S.) - and there actually might be something to this musical revival stuff after all.
A good test will come this holiday season when the long-gestating adaptation of 'Nine' hits theaters in late November. The original musical swept the Tony Awards all the way back in 1982, and a few revivals have been hits on the Great White Way in the years since. Nearly three decades later, the movie may sport this year's most glittery cast, boasting no less than six Oscar winners in its above-the-title cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren. Oh, and its director (Rob Marshall) took home the Oscar for Chicago too. Not too shabby.
The trailer premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday and had the assembled hob-nobbers buzzing, undoubtedly thanks in part to that shot of Cruz you see above. Take a look at the trailer below. Looks like it could have enough starpower to keep the $100 million musical streak going in 2009. Does the trailer (or the Cruz photo) have you hooked or will you pass?
