Holy yuck. Batman! DC Comics, not following the school of thought that tells us if it ain't broke, don't fix it, has decided to "upgrade" Batgirl's costume so that it looks as if she's wearing plastic armor rather than the sleek tights-and-boots standard most fanboys have come to know and love. DC Comics broke the news on its own blog today, with little other explanation. Commenters, however, were less than kind: " Erm… ew. What’s with the purple padded side sections?" wrote one. "I like the cowl and the new utility strap on the leg, but the strange side fabric ruins it." "Horrible. DC what are you thinking?" wrote another.
On the face of it, the costume would certainly appear to be more functional. A young teen - which is what the new Batgirl is - really ought to wear something functional rather than form-fitting when fighting crime.

Longtime fans who think Batman is all POW, BIFF and ZAP from watching the popular and campy TV series are likely to be disappointed. The orginal Batgirl was for many years sort of an odd character, her main role being to sex up the "dynamic duo" of Batman and Robin. As time wore on, she earned her stripes as a character in her own right, until the Joker gunned her down, paralyzing her from the waist down. These days, it looks as if the original character will play mentor to the newest one. One wonders if she advised Batgirl Junior to opt for Kevlar and a thigh belt rather than yellow heels and spandex.
By the way, Bat-fans, a bit of trivia. The villains in the picture above appear to be characters from teh landmark Batman graphic novel, "The Dark Knight Returns," which features an outlaw gang known as the Mutants. No telling if the newest Batgirl will encounter these nasty characters. but if she does, at least she's dressed for the occasion.
