A $150 comic book? Sounds absurd! But the fact of the matter is that following the latest highly-anticipated summer minseries from DC Comics could end up costing you close to that princely sum.
Newsarama calculates buying up every single issue of every title slated to be involved in DC's "Blackest Night" - which promises the eye-popping depiction of tens of popular but dead characters rising from the netherworlds - could cost you as much as $145.55. Now, that figure takes into account not only the main series, slated to debut Wednesday, but every tie-in and accompanying miniseries set to appear on comic-book shelves over the next few months..
For rabid fans, these series can be a delight - they often introduce earth-shaking plot developments and massive changes to popular and durable characters. But they can also take a big bite out of the wallet. Newsarama found last year that buying up every issue affiliated with Marvel's "Secret Invasion" would cost a mind-jolting $378.78, while snapping up everything related to "Final Crisis" would require a lesser-but-still-substantial total of $135.08
This cost-versus-fun debate will become particularly tough in the days ahead. With the nation in the midst of recession - and, I suspect, with comic-book audiences skewing older - comics publishers use these "big events" to try to goose sales from people who are probably able to purchase fewer comics overall. Meanwhile, prices for many of the most popular titles have been going up; a copy of "Dark Avengers," for instance, costs a heady $3.99!
Can YOU afford to buy as much of "Blackest Night" as you might want? Let us know.
