Good luck, Brenda. You're gonna need it!

Holy torn typewriter ribbon! The Flash, that fictional big-city newspaper, is laying off its biggest-name reporter, Brenda Starr.

Who? Well, in years past, Brenda was the most glamorous, hot-trottingest scribe this side of the front page. She was Maureen Dowd, Molly Ivins and Cindy Adams wrapped up in a Jessica Rabbit illustration.

And now, apparently, she's being downsized, just like so many other hardworking, longtime employees of metro dailies.

We've heard so much of this in the real world - the demise of the daily newspaper due to shifts in how people advertising combined with a horrific economic downturn and a distinct lack of innovation from print-paper managers over the decades - that it's not surprising to see fictional ink-stained wretches get the axe. Already, over in Doonesbury, Rick Redfern had to take a buyout from the Washington Post.

Makes you wonder if Shoe or Perfesser Cosmo Fishhawk the only two journalists who work at the Treetops Tattler-Tribune over in "Shoe", will have to take long-overdue early retirement.

I suppose we'll have to get ready for "Brenda Starr, Blogger."
