The funny pages are taking a cue from their comic-book cousins. Like the kooks at Marvel who in 2008 decreed that Spider Man should no longer be married, then concocted a nutball plot development to explain away his wife and marriage, the people who write the newspaper comic strip version are now following suit.
After reading adventures that include both Peter Parker (Spider Man's alter ego) and his wife Mary Jane, for years, readers of the "Spider Man" comic strip were told last week that Mary Jane would no longer appear in the strip. Instead, adventures would now foucs on Parker living with his Aunt May - as if a wedding to Mary Jane had never taken place.
Here's the problem, if you ask me. A marriage did take place! Fans have been reading about Mary Jane for decades! It makes no sense to simply "undo" a marriage and "erase" a character! If you really want her out of there for whatever reason, then have them get a divorce! Have her cheat on him! Maybe Spider Man could take up with Spider Woman or even the Black Widow, and Mary Jane could get fed up with it all! But for Pete's sake, let's let logic and sanity prevail!
I thought I had worked this out of my system last year. Apparently not.
