If it's OK for the ABC television network to devote a half hour each week to 40-something women hooking up with younger gents ("Cougar Town"), then it must be OK for the family-friendly funnies page to spend just a few panels on the subject, too.
Case in point: In Monday's "Between Friends," single lady Maeve spies a healthy-looking twenty-something produce clerk, and lets out what can more or less be construed as a predatory growl to stake her claim to him. Never mind the fact that she'd never date a produce-store clerk for the long term (Maeve strikes us as one of this generally clever strip's more spoiled creations).
Time was the comics wouldn't allow this sort of in-your-face behavior. Single women picking up young college students for a roll in the hay? Does this go with oatmeal or Wheaties or little Johnny's "Skylock Fox for Kids" rebus puzzles? Dunno -but one can argue that Maeve's lustful cry and actions come in marked contrast to what's probably going on today in "Big Nate," "Red & Rover" and - most decidedly - "Family Circus." These sorts of sexual hijinks are why we have graphic novels and the like.
