After the DC Comics miniseries "Last Days of Animal Man" debuted about six months ago,I was pretty gung-ho: DC's done well with series that explore the potential future of its characters, a la "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Kingdom Come." But "Animal Man" may have been better as a concept than it was in execution.
Don't get me wrong. Veteran comics scribe (and "Law & Order" scripter) Gerry Conway sets out to tell a good tale and weaves in some pretty interesting possible developments: The vaunted "Justice League of America" becomes "The League of Titans," for instance, and the Green Lantern of the future is a whale who can talk. Intriguing.
But the story - Animal Man gradually loses his powers but in doing so wins back the family those powers made him neglect - is a little trite, and the sixth issue of this series is just a little too pat for my taste (Add to this theappearance of new villain Prismatik, who hands down wins an award for most annoying - and most garrulous - character of the year. Good Lord, how she prattles on about things we aren't likely to care about! Save it for another chapter, lady...
Perhaps DC has done so many of these that we're simply used to the company giving us a BIG EVENT every time it probes the future. This time we just got a minor happening. Nothing wrong with that. But next time we might alter our expectations.
