First it was an alien invasion. Then a dictatorship. Now, for the first time in years, it seems we're about to get Iron Man, Thor and Captain America - the big three honchos of the old-style "Avengers" team - to come together. It's all part of "Siege," the latest mega-event from Marvel.
According to this dispatch from Newsarama, top Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis will unleash a four-issue mini-series starting in January that will reunite the red-and-gold Iron Man, time-traveling Cap (the original, we think) and Thunder God Thor for the first time in a very loooong while. In doing so, he just might bring back the classic Avengers lineup, something that has also been missing from the funny pages for quite a spell. If it's successful, maybe we'll see DC bring Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman ot the pages of "Justice League," but who can say?
This latest "mega event" comes after Marvel has kept readers hooked on its comics by running "Secret Invasion," in which a legion of shape-shifting aliens disguised themselves as Marvel heroes and infiltrated their ranks, and "Dark Reign," in which villians essentially have taken over the U.S. government. Say what you will about these plot twists, but it seems that the days of telling smaller tales in different titles has gone the way of the 12-cent comic book. If "Siege" generates enough sales and buzz, chances are Marvel will be get something else cooking for the months ahead.
