The Center for disease control and prevention (CDC) has just published the 2009 State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables. This report provides information on the consumption by adult and adolescents in each state. It also provides information on policy and environmental support within each state.
The hope of the CDC is that increasing the awareness of fruit and vegetable intake will help improve the nutrition of all Americans. The goal is to increase the availability, affordability of fruits and vegetables and to improve healthy food choices.
The National Healthy People 2010 goal is to have 75% of the population consuming more than 2 fruits a day and to have 50% of the population eating 3 more vegetables a day.
Utah’s Intake of Fruits and Vegetables
According to this report 32.2% adults in Utah eat 2 or more fruits a day and 24.8% of adult eat 3 or more vegetables a day. While 29.5% of adolescents eat 2 or more fruits and 10.6% eat 3 or more vegetables.
The national average is 32.8% of adults eat 2 or more fruits a day and 27.4% ate 3 or more vegetables a day. For adolescents 32.2% ate 2 or more fruits and 13.2% ate 3 or more vegetables.
While Utah was far from the worst state for intake we are below the national average and far below the Healthy People 2010 goal. It is time that we work to improve the intake and availability of fruits and vegetables here in Utah.
