When it's draft time in your fantasy football league, you have precious few seconds to make critical decisions that you will have to live with for the entire season (and sometimes longer). The time to figure out where you stand on some of the tough decisions is right now.
That's why Fantasy Sports Examiner Dave Del Grande and I are bringing you a series of debates on some of the close calls you may have to face in your draft.
In this installment, we debate Marion Barber vs. Brian Westbrook.
It's great to see Marion Barber get the chance to be the full-time running back for the Dallas Cowboys. He'll surely be one of the better fantasy RBs in the NFL this season, but don't take him ahead of Brian Westbrook.
Westbrook had 90 receptions for 771 yards and 5 TDs last year. That's almost like getting to have an extra wide receiver on your fantasy team. Combine that with his rushing numbers and you get over 2,100 total yards and 12 TDs.
A lot of people think, since Barber had 14 total TDs last year as a part-time player, he will score a ton more now that he will be getting most of the carries. The problem with that theory is that Barber has already been getting most of the goal-line carries. In fact, Julius Jones only got two rushing TDs last year. So you can add the two from Jones, but that won't make up for the loads of extra receiving yardage Westbrook will have.
Also consider that the Philadelphia offense has basically revolved around Westbrook the last two years. The Cowboys, on the other hand, have Terrell Owens, Jason Witten, and Patrick Crayton competing for the ball.
It's conceivable that both of these guys could end up as top-five fantasy RBs when the season is over, but Westbrook should go off the draft board first.
