Can you say "fluke?" Derek Anderson's 2007 season looks more and more like it with every game he plays this season. After barely beating the lowly Cincinnati Bengals, Derek Anderson may have earned himself another start, but it was hardly a repeat performance of his five-TD game against them last year.
He will be replaced by Brady Quinn soon. First-round QBs always get a shot at some point, and Quinn has already been stealing reps in practice. Anderson will likely be benched the next time a game gets out of hand (which may be the very next game).
Sure, several players have been banged up and Braylon Edwards can't seem to get right, but that still doesn't justify the 49.9 rating of Anderson.
But last years numbers do. Anderson only had an 82.5 rating on the way to the Pro Bowl last year. He probably only went to the Pro Bowl because there was no "Inconsistent but Unexpectedly Decent" award. That Cincinnati game apparently made up for the fact that he had 9 TDs and 10 INTs in the last 7 games of 2007.
So, although it may seem weird to recommend trading an inconsistent guy who couldn't be playing any worse right now (which implies he will play better at some point), I still consider it selling high when Anderson is likely to be warming the bench soon. Get whatever you can from him before you just have to drop him. And stash Quinn on your bench while you're at it.
