Need for Speed: ‘Undercovered’
It took 15 installments, but it finally happened,
“Need for Speed” has gone Hollywood.
“Need for Speed” originally debuted in 1994 on the Panasonic game console 3DO, the next chapter, “Need for Speed: Undercover,” will be released by EA Black Box on Nov. 18.
This racing game franchise has come a long way, but EA has stayed true to what makes it popular: races, chases, and a little nitrous. “Undercover” sets itself apart with movie style scenes, narration, and high-end graphics. The action film, “The Transporter,” was used as an inspiration behind the game.
The tri-city San Fran backdrop is layered with high contrast graphics, lens flare and slow motion film replicated moments. Cruising the map and career mode has two very distinct approaches. Career mode is focused on an undercover cop paid to blend in and take on a crime ring. “Undercover” most resembles “Need for Speed: Most Wanted” which was released in 2005.
EA’s “heroic” driving engine powers game play with insane racing maneuvers. Drivers now have the ability to spin their vehicle 360 degrees in real-time. It is confirmed that Nissan GTRs, Ford GTs, and Crown Victoria-styled cars will be in play.
It’s the combination of Hollywood-ized graphics and driving manipulation that could make “Undercover” another blockbuster “Need for Speed” sequel.
