Video game maker, Ubisoft, did announce a delay in the release of Far Cry 2 in December, but it’s closer to store shelves than we think.

The delays to this non-linear first person shooter are due to a major overhaul of storylines, game characters, game map and game play. Basically, Far Cry 2 is a brand new game. The leading factor behind the numerous changes is the fact that Ubisoft was not the original developer of the first Far Cry game. What Ubisoft hopes to do with the sequel is grant gamers real life freedom.

• New game map: No more individual maps, gamers will have plenty of breathing room with 19.5 miles of African inspired terrain to explore. Developers are using animal footage and environment photos to create realistic surroundings from desert to jungle.

• New characters: No more Jack Carver, the original protagonist of Far Cry will not be making the trip to Africa. Instead, players have the choice of eight different mercenary styled characters, each one carrying along a different back story for the game. The players you don’t pick as the main character become friends throughout the game.

• New story line: Now the goal is to take down “The Jackal,” an arms dealer supplying both sides of a war torn African country. Doesn’t matter what mercenary you choose or how you do it, the mission is to assassinate “The Jackal.” Players do have the option to make allies with anyone they choose.

• Real-life weather, structures, and weapons: Weather will vary on the performance of the player. Do well and see blue skies, play poorly and deal with storms. Can’t see past tree branches? Just shoot them down. Structures in Far Cry 2 break away mimicking real life. But be careful with your weapons, older guns will jam.

The changes to Far Cry 2 have raised expectations. I’m willing to wait to see if Ubisoft can meet them.
