The trademarked slogan of San Diego County's Green Flash Brewing Co. is "Taste it once, remember it forever." That phrase perfectly describes the various beers I have tasted from these fine brewers, and the Green Flash Double Stout is no exception.
Father's Office in Santa Monica is currently serving the Double Stout on tap. If you have the chance, this one to enjoy as nature intended- freshly poured from the keg (stouts do no bottle well, hence the "widget" that Guinness invented for their bottled stout).
Green Flash's Double Stout is very dark when poured- almost opaque. The aroma of the head is wonderful, and one can smell hints of chocolate, coffee, and oatmeal. The enticing aroma leads to an even better taste. The Double Stout is quite strong-- 8.8% alcohol by volume and 45 IBUs-- yet the taste is not overpowering. For all of its complexity (and one can make out the chocolate, coffee, oatmeal, and fruit flavors), the entire brew is mixed well with hops. Even though there is a rush of flavors, they blend well together, and the overall impression is very smooth and well balanced. One might even describe Double Stout as light-- for a stout.
Make sure to be on the lookout for this fine stout, and be sure to try any other Green Flash Brewing Co. beers you might encounter. These guys know how to brew.
Cheers,
Owen
