Bear Republic, a wonderful brewpub and microbrewery in Sonoma County, makes a terrific stout. Big Bear Black Stout is another example of the bold yet exciting tastes of these fine brewers.
The Big Bear Black Stout comes in an imposing 22 oz. tall boy bottle (yes, what tasting sacrifice!). Upon opening, the beer gives off a very rich smell, with a strong hint of caramel. The taste could be described as strong, but because it's so well balanced, it is actually surprisingly smooth. There is a very good underlying hop taste, but it contrasts well with the caramel. The head is very dark, and the beer itself is an opaque brown. One can't stare at it too long, because the inviting taste begs to be enjoyed.
According to Bear Republic's website,
Big Bear's bold flavors are produced using a blend of Belgian and English roasted barley and crystal malts. Some unique flavors come forth in the malt character. ...Louisiana sweet molasses and dark brown sugar. This dark brew is well hopped with Chinook and Cascade hops, which are somewhat, masked by the malt.
Overall, this beer is highly recommended. You can find it at Whole Foods for under $5, and likely at any retailer with a decent craft beer selection.
Cheers,
Owen
