I must confess, I have a weak spot for what in my humble opinion is the epitome of beers, the Indian Pale Ale, commonly referred to as IPAs. These are ales that are known for being hoppy and bitter.
In recent years there has been a rush to increase the hop content in IPAs, and this has led to a new breed that some call "San Diego IPAs." These very hoppy IPAs (with higher alcohol contents to match) can be found in this county o’ many microbrews. LA’s proximity to San Diego ensures that a number of these wonderful IPAs make their way north for our enjoyment, including my personal favorite, Stone Brewing Company's Ruination IPA.
Stone's Ruination IPA is an improvement on their original Arrogant Bastard. Whereas the Bastard bottle insults the drinker, Ruination warns you of its strength. It is so named "because of the immediate ruinous effect on your palate." They’re not kidding, and some may indeed find this brew too bitter. A true hophead will not be disappointed, as the bitterness is nicely paired with a smooth ale taste—and a 7.7% alcohol content. I prefer my Ruination well chilled, and find the 22 oz. bottle a nice way to unwind at the end of the week. It’s also available in six packs, and can be found anywhere that has a respectable (not necessarily big) beer selection- Whole Foods, BevMo, and Bristol Farms are a few places I’ve spotted this wonderful beer. I’m yet to find it on tap in LA, but I will continue to search diligently.
You’ve been warned- it’s strong, but I find myself drawn back to the Ruination repeatedly. Enjoy!
