Spotlighting freelance writer: Shannon Dauphin
Two years ago author Shannon Dauphin began her Dauphin Freelance business. Having spent the past 10 years writing as Gwen Masters and just getting married, she felt her life was going in three directions. She decided it was time to allow her journey as a freelance writer, and ghostwriter, to find its place in her world.
With so much going on, it’s a wonder how she manages to accomplish so much, but as she says, “I put my head down and plow through.” When you love to do something, it’s not so much work, as living your dream.
She has fulfilled her dreams by “being a writer everyday,” and Shannon knew she wanted the opportunity to fulfill someone else’s dream. Ghostwriting proved to be an avenue where Shannon could accomplish this goal. It would happen that she enjoys being a ghostwriter so much she “went through a phase where that was all I wanted to do.”
She began ghostwriting for friends before realizing, “I can do this.” She decided to use her newfound talents to parlay ghostwriting into a career. She found that her friends had concepts but needed the time to make them happen. Shannon had the time and the road map. As Shannon says, “I really enjoy taking someone else’s vision and making it a reality for them.”
The process of becoming a ghostwriter was one that developed organically, and in the beginning it was mainly from word of mouth. If you want to become a freelance writer, Shannon advises that you “recognize that it takes time to build up a client list and they are going to want to see your best work.”
“Query widely – focus on what you do best and write those things.”
For example, “if you have a really strong ability to talk about relationships, then focus on magazines that need love/marriage columnist. Build your resume. It takes time.” Patience is key. Don’t give up, just keep writing great articles and putting it out there.
Shannon recommends the following books for writers getting started in their freelance careers: 6 Figure Freelancing by Kelly James-Enger or The Renegade Writer by Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell. Both are in her library and have served as valuable recourses for Shannon.
