SEO, Search Engine Optimization, or web marketing...whatever you want to call it, is one of the most important and misunderstood elements in creating a truly effective website. There are many techniques, tips, tricks, etc for you to learn or for you to hire someone to implement on your website and almost no way of knowing which techniques are correct and which are incorrect.  I will be providing several SEO tips to help steer you in the right direction.

Tip #1: Go to http://website.grader.com

Website.grader.com, created by HubSpot, is a great first step in analyzing what you need to do to get started with effectively marketing your website in the search engines.  It may not cover everything, but it is an excellent, easy-to-understand tool.  One of the first items on its feedback list of your website is the meta tags.  There is so much debate out there about meta tags.  Some SEO experts say that meta tags are essential for getting your site ranked; others claim that meta tags play no role at all in the search engines' algorithms.  So what do we do and who do we believe?  Rule of thumb always when it comes to SEO is listen to Matt Cutts.  He's the true expert.   Google him, watch is videos on Youtube, follow him on Twitter.  He knows what's what.  And for this particular conundrum regarding meta tags, I'll be specific: have your website developer put in meta tag information.  Regardless of whether it plays any role in your website's SEO, meta tags make your site look professional.  As for what to write, be specific and concise.  That's how you should write for your website anyway, so do the same for your meta tags.  And hire a copywriter if you have a hard time writing your own meta tag descriptions.  It's common and understandable for any business owner to have a difficult time writing their own content.  They're too immersed in their own business.  It's like writing a resume; professionals do a much better job at it even though it's your own life they're summarizing on one to two pages.
