A group of Potterheads who were treated to a secret screening of the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince movie scheduled for release in July came away calling the film a disappointment.
After seeing the movie on Wednesday, the fans griped that a number crucial plotlines and characters included in the book had gone AWOL and that, according to one fan, the film is
dominated by romance -- Ron with Lavender Brown, Ginny with Dean Thomas, Hermione's growing love for Ron, Ron's potion-affected desire for Romilda Vane, and ultimately Harry and Ginny.
O.K., so Harry, Ron, and Hermione are 16 in the Half Blood Prince, and we all know what is dominating the minds of 16-year olds. The focus on romance I understand: It's this comment, by another fan at the screening that is really disturbing:
Anyone who has read the book will be severely disappointed.
Yikes.
Other viewers said the movie contained "pointless" scenes, and that the film's ending
partially blows what may be the biggest surprise of the entire franchise.
If that isn't bad enough, the various "memories" that Harry experiences throughout the course of the book have been pared down to a measly two.
While the fans lavished praise on a number of the movie's Death Eater fight scenes, their general opinion remained united: Potter fans are in for a big disappointment -- that is, unless the producers make some big changes between the test screening and the film's release on July 17th.
After watching the recently released featurette on Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince -- take a look at it here; it is fantastic -- I was rabid with excitement. Now, I'm beginning to feel the first tendrils of creeping dread. Let's hope that these Potterheads were either too picky or not paying enough attention or just being hard-asses. If not, I guess we'll be set up for yet another Book Examiner debate after the movie's release: Team Loved It versus Team Disappointed. I'd really hoped we'd all be on Team Loved It. Now, I'm starting to wonder.
If we're facing another Book Examiner debate, it's time to gird up your loins, book fiends. Take a look at the intelligent discussions that occurred during the initial two Book Examiner debates:
