Good news for women interested in learning how to use social media via free courses has arrived, not limited to Little Rock, women in other locations may find similar classes in their area. As it stands, Microsoft Office and Kirtsy are hosting a two-hour crash course on social media for women to help them improve their soft tech knowledge and be more competitive in their careers.
The Little Rock social media class, called “Hands-On Social Media," begins on June 20, 2009 and focuses on online sharing services, document and presentation software as well as social media and networking tools, according to a Microsoft press release. (See other locations below.)
Microsoft Office and Office Live customers will benefit most, but additional sessions will address in-demand topics such as blogging and social media.
Who is the free social media seminar designed to help? One question on a three-question quiz on Kirtsy tells all: “When you see things like ‘twitter’, ‘flickr’, ‘etsy’, ‘vlog’, ‘flagr’,and ‘dopplr’ you think…
1. They’re all soooo 2008…I’m now beta testing things you’ll hear about sometime in 2010, if you’re lucky.
2. I could not live without these things. Please don’t make me try.
3. Where are all the vowels?
4. When you make up words that aren’t really words, you just seem silly.
Answers three and four might be uttered from viable 'Hands-On Social Media' candidates.
Though the goal of the free course is to enlighten rather than to discourage women, it is good for individuals who feel “in the dark” about these new media topics to know they share good company. Many CEOs of large corporations "don't get" Twitter or Facebook for instance, hence the popularity of related tutorials for both business and home users.
Additonally, women more frequently label themselves as “stupid” – or a similar derogative – concerning topics involving computers and the Internet. This is witnessed by similar comments found on technology-related articles online.
Quality courses on social media and computer software can quickly improve general comprehension and confidence on new media topics, a boost that many women need.
