While it is marathon season, there was a national event of shorter distance in Rhode Island this past weekend that merits recognition. Matt Tegenkamp (Portland, OR) and Amy Yoder Begley (Portland, OR) won the U.S. 5K Championships in Providence.
Tegenkamp, who is also the U.S. champion at 5,000m on the track won the title in 13:57. He must still be on cloud nine from his outstanding 5,000m PR of 12:58.56 this summer.
Yoder Begley, the 2009 USA 10,000 meter champion on the track and USA 15K champion ran 15:27. Per her blog, she described the race, “The CVS 5K has a downhill start and an uphill finish. We went out in 4:51 for the first mile and under 10 minutes at 2 miles. I was supposed to sit and wait till 800 meters to go in the race before I started my kick . . .”
Both earned $8,000 for their win.
