Today marks the 37th anniversary of the landmark legislation known as Title IX. I will admit right here that I am a beneficiary of this legislation and staunch supporter but I also understand there’s a lot that people (men and women) who don’t know about or understand why it is important. I recently met a young lady in her 20s who had never even heard of this. Basically, you can't descriminate based on sex in schools in academics or athletics.
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
So, not only does Title IX deal with athletics, but also access to higher education, employment, math and science, standardized testing, education for pregnant students and students who are parents, learning environment, sexual harassment and technology. I’m still disappointed when I hear negative comments about this legislation that has helped so many mothers, sisters, daughters and wives.
This past March I was at the front of my corral before the start line of the cold sloshy Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle and I spotted a young man in the A Corral who looked speedy and he was shirtless. There were a few chuckles from everyone as he walked by, “Ah, youth!” And then he jumped up and down to loosen up with the ease of a talented runner. Being curious, I wondered what college he ran for so I leaned forward and asked him. He replied----without missing a beat. “We don’t have a program, they cut it thanks to Title IX.” His tone was one of disdain. I sighed. I hate to see any athletic program cut or discontinued.
