This was the 13th year for the Ravenswood 5K and there’s no denying since Fleet Feet took over the helm this north side tradition has grown in size and prestige. Luckily the cold rain held off and I have to say it’s a treat to get off the lakefront and explore one of our great neighborhoods. This race is part of the CARA Runner's Choice Series---which certainly attracted some tough competition.
Overall winner was Elmhurst College men’s cross country coach, Jim Akita, who has switched from Universal Sole-Reebok to the Fleet Feet-Nike Racing Team. Akita led the field with his 15:06 win. Finishing in second with a time of 15:19 was Christian Escareno who was competing for Fast Track Racing Team and coming in third place was Dave Wilson in 15:25.
Catherine Beck, an assistant track coach at UIC, was the first woman in 16:55. She was closely followed Colleen Newhart, who crossed the line two seconds later in 16:57 and Rockford’s Jessica Langford, the masters sensation (and mother of four!) told me afterward that she was happy with her 17:18 third place finish because it was her best time this year. Both Newhart and Langford were on the Fleet Feet-Nike Racing Team that won the women's Elite Club trophy at the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K last month.
Top masters honors went to Rob Chenowith in 16:13 and Michele Poss in 19:30. There were 2,795 finishers. For Overall Results and Age Group Results.
Race notes: As i get older, I find that a heating pad on my sad right hip and hamstring the day before a race certainly helps (again, day before). When we were going down Sunnyside and I saw the columns of the Philadelphia Romanian Church it blew me away; another reminder of the amazing treasures in our neighborhoods. A little thank-you to my old track buddy Bob Silas for helping me attach my Chronotrack D-Tag a minute before the race start---I think it’s pretty cool that we were able to recycle these. Lastly, don’t forget to use the goody bag promotions (e.g., 15% off at O’Shaughnessy’s Public House one of my new favorite neighborhood establishments!) as it lets these fine folks know that we appreciate their support!.
