Chicago racing is definitely in full “spring” swing with the Race to Wrigley 5K starting and ending at our famed baseball park, the Path to Progress 5K down near Soldier Field, and the CARA Lakefront 10 Mile up on the north end, all taking place on Saturday morning. If you’re wondering who gets the award for first results to be posted online---it’s Path for Progress 5K (only they did not include the city, state fields) with CARA Lakefront 10 next and as of this posting the Race To Wrigley 5K results were not up yet (come on---with Chip timing there’s no excuse not to get these posted sooner!)
The weather couldn’t have been more unpredictable with temperatures in the 60s and dark skies looming early in the morning as the humidity level started to rise making it feel more like a summer race. Then gusts of wind swirled up out of every direction followed by a period of sprinkles before the sky cleared up. The trees in the park all had fresh buds making this just another typical April day in Chicago.
I was up by Cricket Hill to catch the CARA Lakefront 10 action and enjoyed chatting with Universal Sole owner Joel Feinberg and CARA Board Member Chris Wehrman. I saw Nike rep Greg Costello win in 52:49. He had a commanding lead over second place finisher Emisael Favela who completed the race in 54:12, followed by Elmhurst Running Club’s Doug Pearson in 58:51. It was a delight to see Hoffman Estate’s Kim Miltz racing again and not only leading the women but finishing 7th overall with a time of 1:01:21. Miltz represented Illinois in the 2004 Olympic Marathon Trials in St. Louis, MO where she finished 65th with a time of 2:51:40. Let’s hope we see this talented runner at more races. Christina Overbeck finished second in 1:04:00 and rounding out the podium was two-time Olympic Marathon trials competitor, Ann Schaefers-Coles in 1:06:07. Pearson and Schaefers-Coles were the top masters. Total number of finishers 1270. For complete results
