Today is 8-8-08. It marks the opening day of the Beijing Summer Olympics and I’ll no doubt be watching quite a bit of TV and following the competition online the next few weeks. It’s also my birthday. Today, I’m a year older and as an athlete I can tell the affects of years of running. When I woke up, a nagging injury with my hip was bothering me. (sigh) Inevitable signs of age. But today, I am also a year wiser. When the body says it’s not good to run, I have learned to listen to it and not fight certain aches and pains, but nurture them. So, I joined my fellow runners and did a “power” walk and greeted Lake Michigan at sunrise. I have to confess, I walked at a fast clip and tried to ignore people passing me that I would normally be able to catch up to and pass, it was a little hard but I had to remind myself that sometimes it’s okay to walk. Also, I decided with all of these "lucky" numbers associated with today, I should probably buy a lottery ticket.
Race Report: Elvis is Alive 5K
Last night was one of those nights with perfect temperatures where you wish it was June so you still had a couple months ahead. Nevertheless, it was a memorable night along the downtown lakefront with over 2,000 runners participating in the Elvis is Alive 5K race. Top finishers were Brent Alexander, 27, from Wilmette with a time of 15:53 and Chicago’s Christina Overbeck, 22, was the first woman in 18:08. Note: this was a non-competitive event so the only times recorded were the top finishers. You can find these on Fleet Feet Sports Web site. This year’s theme was Blue Hawaii and there were quite a few runners in Elvis costume---check back here this weekend---I’ll post some more photos from the race.
