Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 children's picture book by American writer Maurice Sendak, originally published by Harper & Row.
The book is about the wild adventure of a boy named Max who is sent to his room without his supper by his mother as punishment for misbehaving. Max wears a distinctive wolf costume during his adventures. He also encounters a variety of strange creatures known as the "wild things".
The book has been adapted into other media many times, including an animated short, an opera, and, in 2009, a live-action feature film adaptation.
The 2009 fantasy film of the same name is directed by Spike Jonze. The film combines live action, suitmation, animatronics, and CGI. The film's premiere was October 13, 2009 and released in North America in both conventional and IMAX theatres on October 16, 2009.
The film's synopsis is about the imaginary adventures of a young boy named Max (Max Records), who is angry when his mother, Connie (Catherine Keener), invites her boyfriend (Mark Ruffalo) over. After he causes one mischievous antic after another, his mother tries to send him to his room. He ends up biting her and running away, feeling angry and unloved.
The boy runs outside at night, through a fence until he stumbles upon a boat. He sails away to an island inhabited by seven imaginary monsters called the Wild Things, where they crown him as the ruler. Throughout Max's stay on the island, he and the wild things partake in an extraordinary adventure.
Filming began in April 2006 at Central City Studios in Melbourne, Australia. According to Jonze, most of the film was shot with a handheld camera in order to complement the "evocative" "other-worldly" feel of the film.
Max Records is an actor who is now well known already for his role of Max in the 2009 film Where the Wild Things Are. Records' earlier experiences in film include the role of young Stephen in the film The Brothers Bloom and a minor role in Directions: The Plans Video Album.
