Easter baskets for little kids are a hallmark of today’s celebrations around the region and while stores everywhere have slashed prices on materials, they can still add up. One way to save is to make your own Easter basket grass. It is free and looks better. Here is how you do it:

  • Collect clippings from the season’s first mowing and spread it out on newspaper to dry.

Note: Do not use clippings from a recently fertilized or bug-sprayed lawn. They are poisonous. Also, make sure the clippings you collect were created on a dry day to avoid mucky clumps.
  • Wait one to two weeks until the grass is completely dry.
  • Place the grass in the microwave for 45 seconds to sterilize the grass and kill any germs.
  • Use the dried grass in the place of the commercial product.

Homemade Easter basket grass is easy to make, free and more attractive than commercial grade plastic substitutes. It can also be tinted through the use of a spray bottle and dye.
