According to a USDA fact sheet, jobs outside of urban areas in Tennessee pay about 1/3 less than those in the city, so penny pinching is important if you want to "keep the farm."
One easy way to save is to hang-dry clothing, but they end up crunchy and stiff. In the high humidity air of mid-August, clothing that has been hung outside can develop mildew and unpleasant odors.
To get the best of both worlds, we hang dry our clothing for at least 4 hours to allow most of the moisture to evaporate, then use the dryer to finish the job. It only takes about ten minutes. Clothing ends up dryer-soft and mildew-free.
With the average load of laundry taking approximately 60 minutes to dry straight from the washer, this is an 80% energy savings.
