NYC is the place to be in the summer because there are so many great free events being offered. From concerts to movies to shopping, you'll never want to be indoors in the air conditioning. The only question remaining is, what to wear?
Outdoor Movies: Every summer, some of the city’s best parks host free outdoor movie nights. Bring a picnic and a bottle of wine to settle in for the night. You don't want to give anyone a pek at the goods when you're sitting cross legged on the grass so try a pair of relaxed harem pants and a light top for a breezy summer look. Click for the movie schedules for Bryant, Central and Hudson River Parks.
Brooklyn Flea: There are a ton of flea markets going on this summer but if you haven't checked out the Brooklyn Flea yet, you better get out there, it’s a vintage lover and foodie’s paradise. They’ve also expanded to under the Brooklyn Bridge on Sundays. Chambray seems to be the fabric of the season so throw on this easy button up shirt that will keep your arms from getting burned while walking around outside. Leave it open with a white tank underneath and some plaid khaki shorts, a pair of Keds will keep your feet comfy while browsing. Check out the Brooklyn Flea's website for more info.
Lincoln Center Outdoor Concerts: There are lots and lots of free outdoor concerts in the summer months but Lincoln Center offers a truly diverse array of outdoor shows from swing to hip hop to Slavic soul (click here for schedules). Try this boho maxi dress that I've been drooling over with a pair of huarache sandals, and you'll fit right in, no matter what type of music you're grooving to.
Coney Island Mermaid Parade: Coney Island's infamous mermaid parade, this year on June 20th, is a time to pull out all the stops fashion-wise, that is if you choose to wear anything besides body paint. Under the sea is the theme and you can always count on American Apparel to hook you up with bright shiny stuff. Pair their purple lame mini skirt with a matching bandeau top and sheer bright shirt and you'll fit right in as a hipster mermaid. Don't forget the face paint!
