For this project you will need:

  • white t-shirts
  • white vinegar
  • rubberbands
  • rubber gloves
  • plastic bowls
  • Kool Aid packets

1. Take a white cotton t-shirt and begin wrapping sections with a rubberband. Once you dye the t-shirt, these wrapped sections will remain white and will be the t-shirt's design.  For inspiring patterns and how to make them, watch these videos.

2. Mix 1 Kool Aid packet with 1 ounce of white vinegar in a plastic bowl.  Mix in a skosh of hot water (but not too hot for little fingers) and stir until all the Kool Aid is dissolved.  This mixture yields enough dye to cover one youth sized t-shirt.  If you are opting for a patriotic theme, Grape makes a good purple/navy color and Cherry makes the brightest red. Inhaling a little of the Kool Aid mix is not advised; however, technicolor snot is kinda funny should this occur accidentally.

3. Dip your t-shirt into the color, or colors, of your choice.  If you use two colors on the same spot they will create a new color. Use this color mixing guide for pointers, or just remember that red+blue makes purple, but yellow+red +blue+green+purple+orange makes ugly. Rubber gloves are recommended because the dye will stain your hands, although it does wash off eventually.

4. Leave all the rubberbands in place and let your t-shirt air dry for 24 hours. Heat will help set the color, so leaving your shirt in the sun for as long as possible is advised

 5. Place a cloth over your t-shirt and iron it to further set the color.  Wash and dry your t-shirt by itself on cold and low settings respectively.

6.  Wear out to your neighborhood fireworks display.  These funky duds will have everyone saying "Oh yeah!"

For more info: Kool Aid is a great for non-toxic crafting; however, it is not  a permanent dye.  You will experience fading when you wash your t-shirt.  If you have older children you might want to try a real fabric dye.
