Thanks to road warriors Lily & Dakota for compiling this list

Summer is in full swing, which means the family will be spending some quality time in the car.  Whether you are planning the Great American Road trip, taking kids to or from summer camp, or driving on 270 at the wrong time, it is a good idea to have some car games handy.

1.  The Name Game- All together now, "Shirley, Shirley bo Birley, banana fanna, fo Firley, fee fi mo, Mirley- Shirley!"  Make sure you use names of extended family members and friends to stretch out the playtime. This game is not recommended if you know anyone named Chuck.

2.  I Spy- The viewer locks in on an object and says, "I spy with my little eye something that is orange".  The rest of the family guesses what the item could be, "Your socks?", "A butterfly?", "That construction barrel?".  Once the item is guessed correctly, it is time to pick a new viewer.  In case you were curious, it was a construction barrel.

3.  Name and find the 50 states- Remember that Friends episode where Ross tries to name all 50 states? It is a lot harder and takes a lot longer than you think.  Once your family has completed the list, keep your eyes on the road. Each family member competes to see who can spot the most license plates from different states.

4.  Mad Libs- Create wacky stories by filling in the blanks with proper names, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, etc.  You can buy Mad Libs at most retailers.  If you are feeling particularly ambitious, you can write your own.  Brush up on your grammar skills with a little Schoolhouse Rock.

5. The Alphabet Game- The first family member to find letters A-Z, either on billboards or license plates, wins.

6.  Bingo- Try this site for printable bingo cards (and for other great car game ideas!)  The first person to get five items in a row diagonally, horizontally, or vertically wins.  For the advanced bingo players, have them try for the postage stamp (four blocks in the upper right corner) or the big X (two diagonal lines).

7.  The Scan game (aka Name that Tune)- Hit the scan button on the radio and have participants yell out the title of the song, or artist.  Time is up when the channel is switched to a new radio station.

8.  Scavenger Hunt- Prior to your trip, create a list of things that you might see along your way including both the mundane (ex. horses) and the extraordinary (The Arch).  The person to check the most items off their list wins.

9.  Cow Wranglers- If you pass a cow pasture and it is on your side of the car, you get to add all the cows in the field to your herd.  Count quick and keep a tally of all the cows you've collected.  To keep things interesting you can lose your herd too. If a cemetery is found on your side of the car and your opponent yells "anthrax" (or the bovine disease of your choice) your entire herd is wiped out and you must start over.

10.  The Quiet Game- Participants may not utter any sounds.  The person that holds out the longest wins, and so do the parents obviously!
