Subway once again took the top spot on Entrepreneur magazine’s 2009 list of “Top 500 Franchises.”
This is the sandwich shop’s 16th time in the top spot since gaining it the first time in 1988. Retailer 7-Eleven, which unseated Subway in 2008, failed to make it into the top ten rankings on the list this year.
Subway CEO Fred DeLuca told the magazine that 2008 was Subway's "best year ever" despite – or maybe because of – the economy.
According to QSR magazine, a quick service restaurant (fast food) industry publication, Entrepreneur’s "Franchise 500" rankings are the most comprehensive franchise rankings in the world. The magazine considers financial strength and stability, growth rate, size of the system and start-up costs among other measures when doing the rankings.
