World Gym, located at 265 Marginal Way, was formerly a Bally’s before it was recently purchased by the owners of Planet Fitness. They made some renovations and improvements and successfully re-opened as a welcomed addition to the gym scene in Portland.
There is a studio in the front where all the classes are held. They have several throughout the day including yoga, Pilates, cardio kickboxing, Body Blast, CardioSculpt, boot camp, Resist-a-Ball, and more. Just outside the studio is where the tanning booths are located; access to these is included in a membership.
The gym floor is very open, with a large weight lifting area surrounded by cardio machines and additional weight machines. There is also a decent sized mat space for stretching or floor work. In the back, there is another studio, which I hear is going to be developed into a specialized personal training area – more on this to come, so stay tuned.
The locker rooms are spacious, clean, and well-lit with private showers, a steam room and a sauna. They are pretty basic, so if you are looking for a lot of amenities, this may not be the place for you. I personally think they are more than adequate, especially for the low monthly membership fee.
The World Gym clientele is really interesting in the sense that there is a lot of variety. The central weights area seems to be dominated by some pretty serious lifters, by which I mean intimidating large men. They’re only intimidating, though, until they catch your eye and flash a smile, or graciously step aside to let you use the machine next. The other areas of the gym have a healthy mix of young and old, men and women, athletic and average. I can say that, without exception, everybody I have encountered there has been nothing but friendly.
Pros: Ample equipment, TVs on cardio machines, free off-street parking, unlimited tanning (please note: I am not advocating the use of tanning beds, just relaying the information), friendly staff, reasonably priced memberships, steam room and sauna
Possible cons: Only one studio for classes, no family memberships offered, no towel service
