If you're looking for a diamond in the rough, look no further than the Greek Sombrero in Jamul. The story behind this place is that a Greek man married a Mexican woman and the pair decided to run a restaurant where both spouses would work as chefs in the restaurant, each cooking the cuisine of their ancestors. There is only one dish on the menu that combines the flavors of both countries, the highly praised Gyros Taco. This is one of my favorite dishes around. You have all the makings of a taco, but with gyros meat and tzaziki sauce.
All the dishes on the menu are exquisite, in fact, it is hard to find Greek food anywhere in San Diego that can compete with the Greek Sombrero. Whatever you order, I highly recommend the potatoes and beans, each of which are cooked with tomatoes. Another highly recommended treat are the spicy carrots. Personally, I'm not a big fan of any type of carrots, but people who eat these delights constantly praise them as some of the best spicy carrots in all of San Diego.
Being out in Jamul, there isn't much of a nightlife here, so many of the locals can be found here just about every night. If you want to join in, the strawberry margaritas are homemade -no mixes here. They're just delightful.
If you're willing to take a drive out to the middle of nowhere, The Greek Sombrero is certainly worth the trip.
