The Leukemia Cup Regatta will be held locally Aug. 30 and Sept. 11-12. The Old Dominion Boat Club, Alexandria, Va., will host the August venue and the Washington Sailing Marina, Alexandria, Va., the September event.
The Regattas, held throughout the United States, offer sailors a competitive race with trophies and other awards, but the real award is raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The society is dedicated to: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Seventy four percent of their total expenses support cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
The Leukemia Cup Regatta history began in 1988 at the Pine Harbor Yacht Club, Ala. Funds were raised in memory of a member of the club who lost his life to leukemia. The Club presented $5000 to the society at the conclusion of the event.
In 1993, the Eastport Yacht Club, in Annapolis, Md., began the concept of competition among boats and crews to raise funds. Their June 1993 event attracted 40 boats and raised $30,000.
Last year, the sailing community raised more than $3.6 million at 38 Regattas, bringing the overall campaign results to more than $27 million. More than 9,600 participants took part in the 2008 series.
