Mental illness is comprised of a variety of disorders all of which affect the quality of life in numerous ways.

Some are easier to diagnose than others and some take much more of a toll on the lives of the consumer and their support system than others. All are treatable through medication, support and therapy. Recovery is possible, but also comes in varying degrees.

Research has shown these disorders to be physically represented by changes in the brain. These changes are visible on MRIs, sometimes on CAT scans as well, and this evidence has been well documented.

The actual causes of mental disorders is not known. Consequently there is no cure. However, through continued research, information, and education medications and treatments continue to be improved.

Disorders known to be mental illnesses include:

  • Autism
  • Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorders
  • Alzheimer's
  • Bipolar
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Depression
  • Eating Disorders
  • Major Depression
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Panic Disorders/Anxiety
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Suicide
  • Tourette’s Syndrome

Many times there can be a dual diagnosis between two or more of these disorders or with substance abuse such as alcoholism or drug addiction. Other diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are often a dual diagnosis as well.

Diagnosis of mental illness is made by medical practitioners from symptoms, behavior and is based on the DSM IV. Many times the first diagnosis is made during or following a psychotic event.
