The Florida Marlins are among several teams interested in Boston Red Sox right-hander John Smoltz, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Juan Rodriquez is reporting.
Smoltz, a certain first-ballot Hall of Famer, struggled badly in his first season with the Red Sox before they designated him for assignment Aug. 7. Smoltz yesterday refused a minor-league assignment, which in theory would get him ready for relief duties.
The Red Sox have until Sunday to either trade him or give him his outright release. In eight starts for Boston, he was 1-5 with an 8.32 ERA and gave up 59 hits in 40 innings. His biggest problem with the Sox was his prospensity for one bad inning.
One positive note was his strikeout-walk ratio (33-9). And his slider still is there. But he constantly got inti trouble with his fastball location.
With the Marlins suddenly back in the postseason race, a veteran like Smoltz could in theory help a pitching staff such as the Marlins'. But he'll still to get people out at some point.
