A story about a mute-boy and his dog

Ever since Oprah used her star power to shed some light on the problems of puppy mills, I have been waiting patiently for other shows on Oprah about animals.

While not a television show (although my fingers are crossed that there will be another show on animal issues soon), I was delighted to see that the recent Oprah's Book Club selection involved a tale of a mute-boy and his dog -- a highly-intelligent fictionalized dog that is able to communicate with humans. Something most people would probably like to imagine about their beloved pets, since most dogs excel at reading their humans.

This is not a book review, as I have yet to read the tale, but Oprah's thumbs-up and other reviews by readers indicate people who love dogs will love this book. There are many books out there about dogs or that include dogs, but few that are touted especially for the dog lover, and few that earn her approval. She is an avid dog lover herself, sharing her home with cocker spaniels and golden retrievers.

The author, David Wroblewski, never reveals what the dog breed looks like, so it's up to the reader to imagine it's face. My guess is that it will look like everyone's special pet.

If you read it, share your thoughts.
