In relation to my previous story on Write Track Admissions, I had to write about a great program that shares the same view about the importance of higher education for ESL students in LA.
The Scholarship Association for English As A Second Language Students (SAESL, www.saesl.org) will be holding its 5th Annual Personal Statement Workshop Series for high school students again this October and November. The goal is to provide writing assistance with personal statements for students applying to college. SAESL has successfully run this program at Wilson High School in East Los Angeles for the past 4 years. This year we will be holding the workshops at Wilson and Roosevelt High Schools!!! We will be inviting all schools that participated in the SAESL Tardeada and those who neighbor Wilson High. Schools that will be invited include Roosevelt, Lincoln, Garfield, Bravo, Wilson, Belmont Newcomer Center, Belmont, Gardena, Manual Arts, Grant, Southeast, Monroe, Green Dot, and Franklin. FYI, many of the these students will be AB540 students.
Please volunteer to read personal statements!!! It will be two very important hours of your life that have a huge impact in the lives of these high students. The one-on-one interaction will be very gratifying for both you and the student. I promise! The following dates have been designated for the Personal Statement Workshops:
October 28, 6:00-8:00 (Wilson HS)
November 4, 6:00-8:00 (Roosevelt HS)
November 18, 6:00-8:00 (Wilson HS)

Please send your information and availability to saesl@mac.com. Please invite your friends and colleagues. Everyone is welcome, as long as they can provide quality feedback to these students. Volunteers must be able to provide constructive criticism and have an idea of what is involved in writing personal statements. Also invite anyone you know who has experience in mentoring/college advising and/or who you know are good writers themselves (English and Humanities majors, writers, college professors, lawyers, teachers, doctors, other professionals, etc).
All volunteers will be provided sample essays and tips to writing personal statements in advance. Visit this website for a preview of essay questions and some tips: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/apply/how_apply/personal_statement.html
I hope you will be able to participate in this important project as we help our young people move forward into higher education.
