With a 10 year / 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, and 5 year / 60,000 mile 24 hour roadside assistance, it is clear that Kia means business when it comes to guaranteeing their car's reliability. This is one of the reasons that we are seeing lots of KIAs and Hyundais on the road. Korean cars are attractively styled, packed with options, and priced less than those of their competitors.
The top of the line KIA Forte SX which I am testing starts at a base price of $17,195. The leather package adds $1,000, and the sunroof tacks on $600 to bring the total sticker price to $19,490 after adding the $695 delivery charge.
The bigger sticker price also adds the bigger engine. The SX gets the more powerful 173 bhp 2.4 liter 16 valve engine. The 6 speed manual will get you to 60 mph in around 7 seconds, but don't worry... fuel economy is still good and you can expect 32 mpg on the highway and 22 in the city.
Of course you can get into the door of a KIA Forte starting at just $14,390 with a 156 bhp 2.0 liter four cylinder and 5 speed manual transmission. You'd be saving money in more ways than just sticker price too, because the smaller engine also squeezes about 3 more miles per gallon both in the city and on the highway.
The KIA Forte SX is a four door sport sedan so the ride is firm, yet comfortable. With a much lower center of gravity than the Kia Soul it holds the road pretty well through the twisty bits. Of course since it is front wheel drive, it does tend to understeer a bit through high speed turns, but that is best for safety. Speaking of safety, the Kia gets high marks with traction and stability control, front and side curtain air bags and ABS brakes.
The KIA Forte SX has all of the power and comfort options you'd expect including power locks and windows, optional heated seats, Sirius Satellite Radio, and blue tooth phone connectivity with voice control. The only real complaint I can come up with concerning the KIA Forte is the lack of an optional integrated Navigation system. I think the convenience of navigation should be available in every car manufactured and sold here in the US.
The bottom line is that the 2010 KIA Forte offers lots of bang for the buck in any engine or trim level that you choose. If you are shopping for a reasonable four door sporty sedan then you should definitely test drive the Forte. You'll then see why Korean cars are becoming a pretty common sight on the road these days
