Those of you that have been faithfully following my "buying a car at auction" three part story know that I am in search of a car that would be roomy enough to take on a cross-country trip, and also allow me to occasionally sleep in the back if need be, all for no more than $10,000. My dilemma of course is that I am by nature a sports car guy. I also would prefer a car that handles well, which can be hard to find when combing the need for cross-country comfort.
So far I have been considering the BMW 5 Series Touring (Wagon), Audi S4 Wagon, Lexus Sportcross Hatchback, Volvo XC70 or 850 Wagon, and even the Mazda 3 Hatchback pictured above. These cars all offer plenty of space in varying degrees, and the S4, BMW, Lexus, and Mazda are all pretty fun to drive as well. The higher end cars like the BMW and Lexus also have optional navigation systems, which can of course come in very handy on a cross-country trip.
In part one of my story I went to a local public auction and found that sometimes a great price wouldn't guarantee a great car. In part two we met Carl, an independent dealer who took me to a dealers only massive private auction. I had done the research, considered my options, driven lots of cars at regular dealers and auctions... it was now time to make a decision.
As someone who already owns several cars the newest of which is 17 years old, I really wanted to get something safe and practical. Around this time, I was also reading ex CIA agent Robert Baer's "Sleeping with the Enemy" which is about how the US has been in a dysfunctional relationship with oil producing counties for the better part of the last century.
I started thinking that maybe with my next car purchase, I should do my part to help the US end its dependency on foreign oil. I started to do a bit of math as well. I realized that if I bought a hybrid, I could literally cut the amount of gas that I would need in half as compared to the BMW, Lexus Sportcross or the Audi S4 wagon. These highline cars also favor premium gas which would mean even more cost per year.
Well then, it seemed to me to be an easy choice. Sure I'm a sports car guy, but don't forget, I already have a Porsche 911 Targa. When the windy roads beckon me, I can still answer the call. So for my future cross country trip, my day to day driving as a real estate agent, and to help save the US and our planet, I made the responsible choice... the Toyota Prius!
Read more about the Prius and how I bought it in Part 4.
