Now you would think that the sports car enthusiast in me certainly would've picked the Subaru WRX (which is basically a rally car for the street) as one of my "Great Cars", but I think that the all-wheel drive systems in all Subarus equally deserve the accolades.  I was heading for the mountains of West Virginia for some skiing in the Timberline and Canaan Valley resort area, so I convinced my brother to lend me his mid 1990's Subaru Legacy Wagon for the road trip.  I had no idea what a great idea this turned out to be.

It snowed about a foot on two separate occasions during the extended weekend, and the Legacy wagon never missed a beat, or a turn for that matter!  While my friend's SUV ended up in a snow bank, I couldn't even get the Subaru Wagon to fishtail, power slide, or slip up in any manner even if I was really trying.  The all-wheel drive technology just keeps adjusting to every bit of input from the road to keep the car on track and on the road.  It was simply amazing.

For those of you who have never been to West Virginia in the Canaan Valley, these roads are extremely windy and mountainous with twists and turns giving way to downhill slopes adorned with plenty of trees just waiting to total any errant vehicle.  On another less snowy trip one of my friends ended up against one of those very same trees much to the excitement of the tow-truck driver who ended up rescuing the car from its quandary.

Because of my great experience with the Legacy wagon, I test drove a used Subaru 2.5 RS which I was considering.  It happened to be a rare slushy and snowy day and just like before, that darned Subaru wouldn't even think of getting sideways or even barely spinning a tire.  I eventually decided against buying the 2.5 RS because I felt that we never get enough snow in the Washington DC area to make full use of it.  Oh and besides my Porsche 911 SC is great in the snow because of the engine being positioned right over the drive wheels!  OK, I'm kidding, it never gets driven in the snow don't worry!

Anyway, back to my point.  Subaru is at the top of the game when you are talking about the practical application of an all-wheel drive system.  You don't even have to be Travis Pastrana to drive it like a pro, the car is that good!  Neither rain, nor sleet, nor hail or snow can upset the great performance of any Subaru from the Outback to the WRX, or the Baja to the B-9, and thus they are all worthy of being one of Drivin' Ivan's Great Cars!
